When it comes to building performance, sustainable architecture endeavors to craft environmentally-conscious structures that minimize energy usage while maximizing the utilization of passive energy and natural resources. Studies underscore the significance of making informed decisions early in the design process to achieve high-performance buildings. This necessitates leveraging computer modeling and simulation to assess a building’s performance during the design phase. Consequently, this course seeks to familiarize students with the utilization of building performance simulation software to aid in decision-making throughout the design process. The key objective of this course is as follows:
Objectives:
- To introduce students to the principles and methodology of using modelling and simulation software forbuilding performance analysis and design decision-making support.
- To introduce DesignBuilder/Insight for analysing building performance in sustainable building design such as empowering energy, carbon, daylight analysis, solar analysis, ventilation and HVAC cooling load studies.
- To kit students with critical thinking during the analysis of the results obtained from the simulationsoftware for optimum design design-making.
My Student’s Works
Assignment 1 Sample: Climate & Benchmarking
The primary objective of this initial assignment is to equip students with the necessary understanding of climate parameters crucial for optimizing the energetic performance of their designs. This assignment comprises three assessment components outlined below:
Component 1: Shading simulation VS experiment (Images_Individual_7.5%)
Component 2: High performance building case study (Report_Group_10%)
Component 3: Climate and energy benchmarking (CN-Quiz_Individual_7.5%)
Assignment 2 Sample: Daylighting Evaluation & Optimization
This assignment focuses on daylighting evaluation using computer simulation and experiments. Students are introduced to the theory behind these concepts, and their assessment process and then trained to apply the acquired knowledge in a case study building.

Assignment 3 Sample: OTTV & Energy Modelling
This assignment aims to expose the students to the different concepts, simulation workflows and technics related to heat gain and energy consumption of a building design. The assignment has three tasks:
- Energy modelling (15%)
- Quiz (10-20%)
Students are introduced to the theory behind these concepts and their assessment process and then trained to apply the acquired knowledge in a case study building.
